Talk: The History of Richmond Workhouse

The Cambrian Centre Local History Group invites you to a talk on Tuesday 10th September at 11:30 am - 1 pm at the Centre.

Speaker: Valerie Boyes, historian, lecturer and member of the Board of Trustees of the Museum of Richmond

All are invited, and the talk will cover:

  • The background to the English Poor Law and the advent of workhouses
  • People concerned with running workhouses
  • The founding of the Richmond workhouse – the site and changes of use over time
  • Richmond Workhouse personalities – including the master, Thomas Heyrick, whose grave and stone can be seen in the Old Burial Ground (Queen’s Road)

Our other activities are all on-going  These include Pilates, bridge, line dancing, drawing group etc.  More details are on our web site on the What's on page, or please contact the centre for more details.

Volunteering opportunities:  The centre would welcome additional volunteers, especially from those with IT and general “DIY” skills.  More information is on our web site here.
